Benefits, Expectations, Responsibilities, and Goals for AP Parents

Benefits

  • Parents will see students academically challenged and exposed to challenging course concepts.
  • Parents will witness the development of critical thinking skills and improved study habits.
  • Parents will see their student become more academically independent.

Expectations

Parents should expect:

  • Access to teachers through email, phone calls, and conference availability.
  • Their student to be challenged through rigorous assessments
  • Content knowledge as well as valuable life skills to be taught in all AP courses.
  • Some students to struggle through the “growing pains” of taking one or multiple AP courses.
  • Their student to be exposed to the course curriculum mandated by the collegeboard.
  • Their student to be taught by AP Institute trained instructors.

Responsibilities

Parents are responsible for:

  • Encouraging students to work to their full academic potential.
  • Inquiring with their student as to what content is being taught and learned.
  • Supporting students as they adjust to the struggles typically associated with initial Advanced Placement course exposure.
  • Encouraging the student to contact and discuss with their instructor any class concerns the student might have regarding content or academic progress.
  • Contacting the course instructor for class information or questions.
  • Signing the AP Commitment form, verifying that they understand the expectations and procedures of the Westerville Central AP program.

Goals

Parents will:

  • Provide a nurturing academic environment.
  • Assist their student with time management strategies.
  • Expect their student to work to the best of their ability.
  • Expect their student to maintain a high degree of academic integrity.
  • Parents will explore www.collegeboard.com in order to gain a better understanding of Advanced Placement philosophy, courses, and procedures.
